We will discuss Parts I and II of Daniel Dennett's 1991 book Consciousness Explained. Was consciousness really explained two decades ago? Read this book to find out. Start early to have a good chance of grokking this 450-page book, which served as the textbook for an 8-week course taken by one of our members. We promise that you will never think the same way about thinking again.

This meeting will be held at a private home in east-central Denver, near the intersection of Colorado Blvd. and Alameda Ave. The address and directions will be emailed several days prior to the event to those who have RSVP'd Yes. You may RSVP on either the HOC Meetup site or DAFT's Meetup site, or both. Space and seating are limited, so an RSVP is required if you're planning to attend. If circumstances should change after you RSVP "Yes" for the event, so that you are unable to attend, please do change your RSVP before the event.

Guest presenter: The Rocky Mountain Paranormal Research Society.

From their website: "The Rocky Mountain Paranormal Research Society was formed in 1999 to help people and study paranormal phenomena. We conduct our investigations with a scientific approach. We feel that an open mind is the most important tool that you can use. Our typical investigations consist of an interview with the people involved, historic research, and an on-site investigation if we feel that the phenomena can be documented. We do not have 'specialists', 'Certified ghost hunters' or 'Demonologists' we have dedicated people with backgrounds that help us research the unknown with an open mind to get real results."

Our Humanist discussion series continues. This time we will be discussing Austin Dacey's book, "The Secular Conscience". Dacey, a philosopher and writer who works for the Center For Inquiry in New York, makes the point that matters of belief and conscience should not remain private. A small excerpt from the book can be viewed at: http://www.austindacey.com/writing.html

The choice of material was decided by a vote at our last meeting, so there is already enthusiasm for this book. Unfortunately, it is not available in paperback. There are a couple copies at the Denver Public Library, and if these are checked out, other local libraries have copies.

This event will take place at a private home in east-central Denver, near the intersection of Colorado Blvd. and Alameda Ave. The address and directions will be emailed several days prior to the event to those who have RSVP'd Yes.

Announcing a new Meetup in support of Metro Atheists

What: Metro State Atheists presents Victor J. Stenger

When: November 10, 2008 1:00 PM

Where: Click the link below to find out!

Meetup Description: This is a Metro State Atheists event. They're a student group at Metro State College, on the Auraria Campus in Denver, and are a Center for Inquiry affiliate. This event takes place from 1-3 p.m. at the Tivoli, which is the easiest building to find on any online map of the campus. No charge for entry, either.

There's currently a full description of the event on Metro State Atheist's new blog: http://metrostateatheists.wordpress.com/

This is a presentation by Stenger based on his book, "God: The Failed Hypothesis." If any of you heard Stenger's presentation at the February 2008 Humanists of Colorado meeting, this will be similar to that excellent presentation, and will undoubtedly be worthwhile. The HOC has DVDs of the February event for sale, yet this is a chance to catch him live.

This is plenty of advance notice for any of you who may not have read the book. (It's a quick read, and pretty easy. For a book that touches on physics.)

Thanks also to Jeanette Norman of D.A.F.T. for raising awareness of this event.
