This month we discuss Primates and Philosophers: How Morality Evolved by Frans de Waal, a professor of psychology at Emory University and director of the Living Links Center at the Yerkes National Primate Center in Atlanta.

In Part I of the book, de Waal uses knowledge gained through his research on primate behavior to argue that moral behavior is not uniquely human and that our moral sense has evolved incorporating the moral behavior of our animal ancestors. Part II contains the responses of other writers to de Waal's ideas, some in support and some in disagreement. These essays are written by philosophers Peter Singer, Christine M. Korsgaard, and Philip Kitcher and science writer Robert Wright. In Part III, de Waal addresses the comments put forward by the other writers.

The meeting will be held at a private home in east-central Denver, near the intersection of Colorado Blvd. and Alameda Ave. The address will be emailed several days prior to the event to those who have RSVP'd Yes.

Bruce Smith is a Denver-based educator and freelance writer. After starting his career in the public schools of Columbia, Missouri, he went on to work at various Sudbury schools. On staff at Alpine Valley School in Wheat Ridge since late 1998, he became the founding director of the Center for Advancing Sudbury Education (www.sudburyschooling.com) in 2006. On August 9, in addition to providing an overview of Sudbury schooling, Bruce will speak to its humanistic flavor and what it reveals about the state of education in America.

The Sudbury model of education rests on the premise that, since human beings are naturally curious, the best learning is self-directed. With core beliefs in freedom, respect, and responsibility, Sudbury schools are run democratically: everything from the rules to the budget to hiring is decided by voting among students and staff. Sudbury Valley School pioneered this model in 1968 in Framingham, Massachusetts; currently over two dozen schools around the world have adopted the Sudbury model.
