There exists two distinct models for how one should concern life; both of which have their advocates. Ethical Altruists would emphasise the virtue of being concerned for others whilst Rational Egoists would emphasis the virtues of being concerned with oneself. I draw upon psychology to explore personalities and examples of where there are imbalanced tendencies towards concern for others (e.g. altruistic suicide) and towards oneself (e.g. narcissism and psychopathy). The balance is found in enlightened self interest and through development of compassion and wisdom.
