Recover from NYE celebrations and come along for a BBQ to kick off 2008. As with all events we've found a religiously inspired excuse to make it a special day!! Background The Holy Prepuce, or Holy Foreskin (Latin pręputium or prepucium) is one of several relics attributed to Jesus. The Feast of the Circumcision of Our Lord is a feast day of the Eastern Orthodox Churches on January 1. The Feast of the Circumcision was formerly celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church as a holy day of obligation (a day on which Roman Catholics must attend Mass). To believers, it is a feast celebrating not only Jesus, the "Giver of the Law", consenting to submit to Jewish Law, but also the first time that Jesus spilled his blood for mankind. It thus demonstrates not only Jesus' obedience, but also forshadows the Crucifixion.

Were you around in the 60s & 70s?? What was it like? In absence of any other suggestions I've gone with Kirribili Club which is recently refurbished and has excellent views Afternoon chosen as it means no one will miss family lunches or evening outings. I realise being a baby-face Gen Y'r many of you may not have been encouraged to come along to events so I've created this event just for you! Hope one of you will want to organise future events. RSVP with +1 or +2 if you would be bringing one or two friends! Cheers Ben

Christmas is not the only celebration going on at the end of December! There are three international event two days prior! On December 23rd the Sydney Humanists plan to celebrate: + FESTIVUS Festivus was invented in 1966 by Reader's Digest writer and editor Dan O'Keefe, but popularised by the TV show Seinfeld. The Sydney humanist end of year celebration will somewhat follow the traditions of Festivus, we will have all the trappings like the "aluminium festivus pole", the "Airing of Grievances" and of course "Festivus Miracles". + HUMANLIGHT HumanLight is the celebration of a Humanist's vision of a good future. They celebrate a positive approach to the coming New Year. + SUMMER SOLSTICE Summer Solstice is the longest day in summer (although winter solstice is more commonly celebrated in the northern hemisphere as a sign that it?s time to start thinking about sewing crops, as there are few farmers amongst us, summer solstice is just as good a reason for celebration). We will be meeting in the botanical gardens near the duck pond at 1pm on Sunday December 23, bring a plate (and perhaps a blanket) and celebrate the end of 2007.
My mobile number is 0412326820 Let me know if you need directions. Cheers Trent

Beware of the Dogma SOLD OUT - RSVP NO LONGER REQUIRED "As the country beats a rapid retreat towards the gurgler, it?s time to once more dissect the body politic. So glove up and join The Wharf Revue, Australia?s finest satirical vivisectionists, as they fillet the sacred cows with a blunt knife, a piano and a capful of Dettol. "

There exists two distinct models for how one should concern life; both of which have their advocates. Ethical Altruists would emphasise the virtue of being concerned for others whilst Rational Egoists would emphasis the virtues of being concerned with oneself. I draw upon psychology to explore personalities and examples of where there are imbalanced tendencies towards concern for others (e.g. altruistic suicide) and towards oneself (e.g. narcissism and psychopathy). The balance is found in enlightened self interest and through development of compassion and wisdom. Note: This is not an official Meetup, but an external event. Ben Felden, organiser of the Humanist Metup will talk at the Philorum 18:15 for a 18:30 Start. Finish 21:30 (Feel free to come and go at any point during the night.) The Members Bar, Floor 1 (Keep winding up to the top of the stairs.) The Gaelic Club 64 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills Sydney, Australia (100 metres from a Central railway station exit.) Cost: Free (Patronise the bar).
