I think that more people would track as humanists if they filled out an appropriate "are you a humanist" questionaire. There is a lack of knowledge out there as to what a humanist is.
I also believe that a lot of people say they are religious when they are not and that that is related somewhat to old-time beliefs that it is good/right to have a religious belief. Also it is easier at times to allow someone external to dictate what is right/wrong than to take responsibility for those choices ourselves. |

I agree, most people don't know what a Humanist believes. The statements are a good starting place. Yes the freedom to decide for yourself can be a frightening one - facing the possibility of a major mistake and taking responsibility.
