Hi all,

I joined this group last year as I thought it would be one that was in line with my philosophies, but I admit to leaving it because the meetings that were organised did not seem to relate to Humanism itself but more to just hanging out socially.

Therefore, I left the group.

I have re-joined because I think Humanism has a lot to offer but, I have noticed that this group seems to have come to a standstill in regards to meetings and discussions.

I am surprised at the lack of commentary in light of recent events around the world that indicate a growing threat to free speech and all the implications of such a threat.

Anyone care to comment?

Hi man of reason,

In case you may not know some of the recent developments to the group, the original organiser, Ben, decided he wanted to stop being in that role. Ben did a lot of work for the group and did initiate most of the activities.

I have stepped into the breach for the next 3 months (with no plans to continue after that) just to try and keep the meet up group in existence (meet up was going to close it down) but did ask all members to come up with any activities or events they might like to see us organise.

If you have any suggestions in this regard please feel free to offer them.

I don't think it is too bad if the group is used at times for socialising, but there have been other events which were not just that - the discussion about masculinity & feminity at the botanical gardens, sculptures by the sea, festivus, holy prepuce, 60s & 70s etc. Another one of the groups we both belong to have a meet up once a month just to do that - the atheist social lounge.

i would be interested in actively contributing to this group as a member with more of a bent on all schools of philosophy. i recently joined the atheists group. some fine minds there but i must say i feel an impostor and interolper as my need for outlet would be best served by a 'free thinker and philosophers' group.
i also think it would take the luring of those of the ilk, bent profession to feed into the group to feed minds like mine to tittlelate and pique interest. otherwise it is just a hang out club which is nice but without focus and intent tends to stagnate.
maybe for starters we could find some links to great talks about the place and dump the links in somewere so at least we know what is out and about?
i am new to sydney from melbourne and looking to forge meaningfull connections iwth like minded people so am hungry

cheers
