Religion: Salvation or Symbiosis? by Dr. Mark Welter

For our April meeting we are proud to welcome Dr. Mark Welter, World History/Religion teacher and HofM member. Mark has degrees from St. John’s University, Mankato State and the University of Minnesota and has taught in this field since 1963. He is retired from St. Cloud University but is currently teaching in an Olli program (for senior citizens) at the U of M. Here, in his own words, is a summary of the talk:
"‘Can anything be understood unless the first cause is known?’ — Thomas Hooker, 16th century Anglican Bishop
“Traditional religions contend that their beliefs are exclusive truths revealed by Supreme Beings. History tells a very different story. ‘Sacred’ dogma and/or ‘truths’ are, in reality, the outcomes of universal and ecumenical interchanges. They are a symbiosis of ideas from across the world community. Not only have all religions taken part in this mutual borrowing; they have molded attractive ideas into rationalization for class differences and preservation of cultural values. *I am indebted to Rebecca Curland and her excellent February presentation for inspiration for this interpretation of religious history.“
