Our speaker will be Fred Edwords, the former Communications Director of the American Humanist Association and now head of the United Coalition of Reason (UnitedCoR). He will be speaking on the impact of the United CoR’s billboard/advertising campaign around the country – including the New Jersey Coalition of Reason (NJCoR), formed in October 2009. NJHN is a member organization. NJCoR now has a billboard up in Kearny on the NJ Turnpike western spur southbound, just past 15W. Have you seen it? Visit the NJCoR website for more details!

Following his talk, Fred will lead a training session from 4:00-6:00 pm for all interested in media and community outreach efforts.

Cost: $3.00 to cover refreshments. We will welcome additional contributions to cover room and speaker

Our November Meeting topic promises to be exciting. We'll continue our discussion based on Greg Epstein's book, Good Without God.

Much of what we do or think about has its moral dimensions. How do Humanists understand morality? Where does our sense of right and wrong come from, if not from God? Is it 'objective' or 'subjective'? How do we make moral decisions in our daily lives? How should we relate to those who see religion as the source of moral teachings?

Joining our conversation will be two distinguished experts on Moral Philosophy:
- Dr. Jeff McMahan, Professor of Philosophy, Rutgers University
- Dr. Julian Savulescu, Uehiro Professor of Practical Ethics, Oxford University

The Rutgers Humanist Chaplaincy is hosting a talk by Greg Epstein as part of his national book tour for the release of “Good Without God: What a Billion Non-Religious People Do Believe”.

Greg is the Humanist Chaplain at Harvard University. The book describes his personal journey to embrace the lifestance of Humanism and how those who do not believe in gods or the supernatural can live fulfilling, ethical, hope-filled lives while contributing to the betterment of humankind and the health of our planet. It is also a unifying call to good people of every faith and belief system to work together toward these common goals.

We're asking everyone who wishes to bring a can of food to donate to the Rutgers Against Hunger campaign.

The group discussion topic will be “Journeys to Humanism: How did you arrive at what you believe or don’t believe?” We’ll get to know each other a lot better and get to see the different perspectives each of us brings. Come and bring a friend.

P.S.: We’re still looking for those willing to share their musical talents with the group.

Marc Adams: Being a Gay Evangelical Christian And Dealing with the Religious Right

Reared in a cultish, fundamentalist Baptist home, Marc Adams was aware that he was gay by the age of seven. After being forced by his parents to attend Jerry Falwell's Liberty University and undergo reparative therapy techniques, Adams finally began his journey to self-acceptance at age 23.

He has since authored eight books, including his award-winning autobiography, The Preacher's Son, and The Do's & Don'ts of Dealing with the Religious Right.

Marc is also the founder and executive director of HeartStrong, Inc., the only educational nonprofit in the world with the sole mission of providing outreach and support to LGBT students terrorized at religious educational institutions.

A Q&A will follow the talk.
