While Congress moves closer to a pivotal vote on health care reform, there is still confusion and tension around what reform will actually mean. What will it cost? Will coverage be universal? Will there be a negative effect on current programs like Medicare? Will there be a public option? Are we merely tweaking a bad system? How do we go forward when there isn’t even a consensus about the most basic question of all: Is health care a fundamental right? Health Care Reform: How Real and at What Cost? will focus on the many questions that surround this complex issue -- with U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner of New York’s 9th District; Sinsi Hernández-Cancio of SEIU’s Healthcare Equality Project Dr. Laura Boylan of Physicians for a National Health Program; and Cheryl Matheis of AARP. Admission is free, donations welcome. No reservations – arrive early.

The program is co-sponsored by the New York Society for Ethical Culture and 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East.

In this film based on the classic novel by H.G. Wells, a scientist (Rod Taylor) invents a time machine that allows him to explore the earth's distant future -- a place of idyllic beauty that also harbors a sinister evil. Co-starring Yvette Mimieux as a docile inhabitant of the future, The Time Machine won an Oscar for its trippy special effects. Beware the Morlocks!

Join us as we experience The Time Machine, followed by a lively discussion of the ethical issues raised by the film.

Complimentary snacks and beverages.

Cost: $5.00

In Gattaca, our hero is one of the underclass, only useful for menial jobs because of inferior genes. But, he has ambitions, and therein lies the tale. The movie draws on concerns over reproductive technologies which facilitate eugenics. More pertinent today than ever before, the film makes us wonder: What part do our genes play in our destiny?

The newest entry into our "Classic" Sci-Fi series, this 1997 thriller stars Ethan Hawke, Uma Thurman and Jude Law. *For you science buffs, the name "Gattaca," uses the initial letters of the four DNA nitrogenous bases: guanine, adenine, thymine and cytocine.

A lively discussion led by Chris Everett will follow the film. Suggested Donation $5 - includes popcorn and drinks.
