Our group will have a booth at Riverfest, as we did last year. It has been very successful in the past, and we hope to have a repeat of lots of good conversation, a small amount of bumper sticker sales, and lots of literature distributed.
We will be in space # 203 which is on Water Street, near the corner of Grace and Water, in front of the parking lot which is behind the Cotton Exchange. Our tent is covered, and will have a few chairs, and tables for displaying literature.
We are looking for our members to volunteer to be at the booth for a 2 hour time period on Saturday and Sunday, and for a couple of people to stay and break down the booth on Sunday evening by 5pm and help transfer the tent, etc to a car. We need help Sunday 10-12, 12-2, and 2-5 especially. And 1 or 2 more people for each slot on Saturday too.
Please RSVP with a specific time you can work at the booth. We would like to have at least 3-4 people on hand at all times, but not so many as to prevent the casual visitor to approach - no more than 5 volunteers at once, I would think. If you volunteer, you will receive a Training memo about how to talk with people who are curious about what Humanism and "freethinking" is - as I said, it has been a fun time, with only a very rare antagonistic response. We need people who are welcoming and can walk up to a stranger with a big smile.
Your initial statement is extremely important. Keep it short. Here are a few examples:
“Hi there. Humanism is a positive, non theistic, very ethical way of living.” Can I show you some literature?
“Hello, we’re with the Humanists and Freethinkers of Cape Fear, a new group providing a home for non theists to meet and build a community of likeminded people.”
“Hello, our group provides a home and public voice for non theists interested in a positive, ethical, life stance. Here’s some information.”
Then just let them talk .
Thanks Everyone!!
