A Pool Party! Sunday afternoon of Labor Day weekend (Sept. 6) so mark your calendars now!
One of our members in Leland has graciously offered to host an afternoon Pool Party at their home.
Let’s celebrate the beginning of autumn (well, almost) and the resumption of our meetings with this family get together featuring our usual yummy pot luck spread and swimming fun. The party will be from 2:30 to 6. Paper goods, ice, soft drinks and sub sandwiches will be provided. New info: We will be providing sub sandwiches, so we are looking for salads, deserts and other side dishes from the party goers!! But, do not feel that you have to bring food- we will be fine with just the sandwiches. We want to make this easy for people to attend! Just bring yourselves, towels if you are swimming, and food if you care to contribute something. . BYOB too please. We do ask that all children be supervised in the water at all times – there is no lifeguard on duty. This is a good chance for relaxed mingling and an opportunity to get to know other members of our group. We hope you can come!! RSVP early – we may have to cut off the number of guests should the response be more than our host can accommodate.
Please RSVP with the number of people who will attend. You will receive directions to the house a few days before the party, and will be notified of a postponement in case of rain.

Hi Everyone! We're finally starting up a secondary monthly Meetup for a small group discussion of interesting articles relating to different aspects of Humanism.

We're meeting at the Unitarian Universailst Fellowship building, as usual, except we will be in Classroom 2, in the main hall of the building. Space will be a little limited, so please RSVP if you plan to make it.

We'll be discussing:

"Atheists for Jesus" by Richard Dawkins
(click the link to read)

I hope to see you there, and if you have a suggestion for a future discussion article, bring it along, or post it on the message board. This meeting will be on the third Monday of every month.

I'll first we'll discuss some of the ways in which the arts have been traditionally valued (as morally enlightened, as a kind of calling, as justification for elitism, as spiritually and communally uplifting, etc.) and relate these to cinema, which as a relatively recent medium is still typically excluded from such conversations. Drawing examples from recent French, American, and other world cinemas, I'll then go on to talk about cases in which mainstream and arthouse tendencies, low and high art, have become blurred or combined, in peculiar but often very progressive ways. Case studies will range from politically engaged zombie films (France), abstract or unplaced war films (America, France) to SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. Some film clips will be shown.

Many times Humanists think that humanism is only informed by Reason and Science. The arts and in this case cinema provides us with new windows to our world and provide transformative experiences to be more human.

Highway cleanup, starting at Stuckeys truck stop on Hwy 421, just on the other side of the Isabelle Holmes bridge on Saturday the 14th of March beginning at 9 AM. We will provide gloves, vests & trash bags. Suggest you bring "grabbers" to pick up trash.

Usually takes us about 2 hours to complete the job, depending upon how many folks we have. Hope to see many of you there. We will meet in the parking lot of the truck stop just over the bridge which is North of downtown. From 3rd Street and Market, head north on 3rd(pass PPD). At stoplight where US 76 West sign is, turn left and cross the bridge. Stay to the right, and turn right at the first light ( 421.) The truck stop is immediately on your right. Park across from the store, and we will meet in the parking lot.

SUMMER SOLSTICE PARTY - Anyone who was at last years party will attest to a great time. We will again meet at the Werner's house, which is in the Middle Sound Loop Rd. (Ogden) area, and we will do our best to keep the Sun from "Consuming the Night" !! Lots of magic will be needed
We will meet at 5:30 pm on Saturday June 20th for a picnic dinner, prizes, games, camaraderie and a bit of story telling. Human beings are story tellers, with some research showing 90% of our time with others spent in sharing stories. Most of us have a story or two that is really good and some are better than others with telling them, but this is your chance to talk among friends, so you don't have to be an expert performer! Think about a special event you participated in , a disaster you survived, scary , beautiful, funny times, and plan how to tell a (not toooo long! ) story. After dark let's sit around the back porch and hear some good ones, all while enjoying some snacks and drinks. We will provide hamburgers and hot dogs (including veggie ones). You bring a side dish, desert, or a snack to share along with your beverage of choice. Soft drinks will also be provided. Music and fun, good folks and joy.
(Please note, this party is for active, current, members of The Humanists and Freethinkers of Cape Fear. We ask that you have attended at least one regular meeting prior to your "Yes" RSVP. )

Directions will be given the week of the party to those who have RSVP'd , so please do it now. Thanks, and see you there!

This could be very interesting! I am posting it here under a Meetup, but I do not know at this time if we will attend as a group, or of there is a cost for tickets. But you may want to put it on your calendar for your personal info!

Let's share our thoughts in community about what Humanism means in our daily lives in these turbulent times. What does your understanding of Humanism inform you how to handle the uncertainties, dangers, and real problems in our changing world? Religion may offer solace to believers in tough times. What can we tell others about what sustains us?

Bring a pot luck dish and join us afterwards.
