Highway cleanup, starting at the truck stop on rt. 421, just on the other side of the Isabell Holmes bridge on Saturday the 15th of September beginning at 9 AM. We will provide gloves, vests & trash bags. Suggest you bring "grabbers" to pick up trash. Usually takes us about 2 hours to complete the job, depending upon how many folks we have. Hope to see many of you there. We will meet in the parking lot of the truck stop just over the bridge.

We will now meet at the Tidal Creek Cooperative store Community Room. This space is located at 5329 Oleander Dr., Suite 204. This small shopping area is located just to the West of the old Cinema 6 movie theater, across from Jungle Rapids park and Eddie Romanellis restaurant. Great Harvest Bread Company is also here. Go up the stairs outside, or use the elevator to get to suite 204. Our Program for this kick off meeting of the official chapter of AHA will be a talk by Mike Werner. He will speak on the topic " The Evolution of Humanism in the 20th Century"
MICHAEL WERNER has been devoted to Humanism for thirty years while raising a family and being successful in business. Fighting for civil rights at an early age and later working in most all the Humanist organizations, much of his life has revolved around promoting our lifestance. He has been head of the Chicagoland Humanists; on the board of the Unitarian Universalist Humanist group, HUUmanists; member of the North American Committee for Humanism; an adjunct faculty member of the Humanist Institute; and board member and past president of the AHA. Werner has spoken and taught widely in the cause of Humanism and humanistic programs such as Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. He started and led a Self Management and Recovery Training recovery program for addictions in Chicago. With his graduate background in chemistry he also runs a successful business while enjoying the love of his partner and three children.
Your new (temporary) board of directors is very excited about our plans and prospects going forward, and hope to see as many of you as possible at this first meeting in our new venue. We hope you will all want to be a part of the events we are planning.

The Involvement Carnival is a chance for UNCW students (especially freshmen and transfer students) to see what involvement opportunities exist for them on campus and in the Wilmington community. Student Organizations, UNCW Departments, Religious Organizations (generally local churches), Community Service Agencies, as well as Local Businesses take part in this event. Many student organizations rely on the Involvement Carnival as a recruitment opportunity since many students passing by the tables often stop and sign up to receive more information about a group. Humanists & Freethinkers will staff a table at the carnival. This is our chance to connect with UNCW students and let them know we are here Stay tuned about how to sign up to work the table! The 2007 Involvement Carnival is scheduled for Wednesday, August 29th and the rain date is set for Wednesday, September 5th. The carnival will run from 10am-2pm with check-in beginning at 9am.

This is a BBC documentary, hosted by Jonathan Miller, which traces the origins of atheism, or disbelief, from earliest times to the present day. The first episode, which will be our program, begins by exploring the nature of belief and disbelief, calling upon the expertise of present-day philosophers, historians and anthropologists. I think this video is a much better choice then what I had planned, and I hope to see you all there. For any of you that were looking forward to watching Zeitgeist, I will bring along a couple of copies. Todays meeting will be another important step for our group. We will have the first ever elections for the first Officers and Board members of the official new organization, The Humanists and Freethinkers of the Cape Fear" (HFCF for short!) The first officers will serve from June '07 until January of '08. We will conduct regular elections each year in October as stipulated by the newly approved Bylaws of this group to choose officers for a full year term. Nominations and volunteers will be solicited from the attendees at the June meeting. If you are interested in being an officer and cannot attend this meeting, please notify Suzanna, the current Coordinator of this Meetup group. After the election, we will socialize, celebrate and plan our "entrance" into Wilmington and surrounding area as an official chapter of the American Humanist Association! Please bring a snack to share - light lunch fare, desserts, etc would be great!

You are invited to come to Greenfield Park to see the play "As You Like It" Friday 6/22. The play starts at 8, but this is an open air amphitheater with comfortable seating, and you are allowed to bring coolers, etc. So pack a picnic and see Shakespeare performed under the stars! We will start to gather around 7pm. The performance is technically free, but they will hit you up hard for a "donation" , so be kind and give a few dollars as you come in. We will be sitting down front, as the sound quality is better there. Look for a balloon to mark our location. Mary and Donna, our Social committee, will be there along with some other guests. (Anyone can bring guests, of course) In case of rain, we will gather at a restaurant on Carolina Beach Rd not far from Greenfield Lake park. It is "Bon Appetite". Unfortunately, they don't encourage you to bring your own food and beverages to the restaurant!

We will tell of our experiences, share methods and tips for dealing with your children (and grandchildren!) and their religious friends, etc. Please bring articles or books which you may have used to promote positive ethical living without superstition in the raising of your children.
