Our April meeting will continue the discussion about the possibility of our group joining with another new group in the area, the Cape Fear Humanists. Poll results will be disucssed, and a final decison made. We have just been made aware that The Humanist Association is active in this area. We were already considering using "Humanist" as part of our title in order to utilize their tax deferred status, etc.

Please join the discussion and plan the future of this great group of Freethinkers!

Hi All,
We are planning a social outing for Sunday evening, April 1, (yes, April Fools Day!) at 6pm. We have reserved a private area of Romano's Macaroni Grill, near Mayfaire Shopping Mall. This restaurant has good Italian food, but is usually very noisy, so that's why we got a private room. This is just a chance to have a good meal and get to know some fellow free thinkers a bit better. Please RSVP soon! I look forward to seeing you there.

Our March meeting will include discussion about the possibility of our group joining with another new group in the area, the Cape Fear Humanists. We have just been made aware that The Humanist Association is active in this area. We were already considering using "Humanist" as part of our title in order to utilize their tax deferred status, etc. We hope to have a guest speaker from the new group so we can learn all that would be involved with joining forces with them.
Pete will also be showing off the new website he has been working on.
Please come join the discussion and plan the future of this great group of Freethinkers!

Since this meeting falls just one day prior to Charles Darwin's birthday, let's discuss how the theory of evolution has impacted todays beliefs about how life began on Earth. The discussion will be unstructured however, so please bring your ideas, concerns, book recommendations, movie reviews, whatever, and share with the group. If you can't attend this meeting, be sure to listen to WQHR on Monday, Feb 12th, and hear our day sponsorship. We will commemorate Darwin Day, and the announcer will mention Cape Fear Freethinkers several times during the day. Thank you to Donna for submitting this idea and making the arrangement with the radio station! We will have a collection to cover the cost of this sponsorship. If you would like to contribute, but can't make the meeting, please contact me here via email.

This will be a great way to socialize and see the Garden show. Details:

The Ability Garden at the Arboretum is hosting a Preview Party in conjunction with the Wilmington Garden Show. The Preview Party will be in the Schwartz Center downtown on Friday, Feb. 9, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and costs $25.00 in advance and $30.00 at the door. You can order tickets by calling the Arboretum office at 798-7670. Proceeds go to support the programs of the Ability Garden. In addition to being the first to see and shop from the vendors at the Garden Show, your ticket puts you in a drawing for one of several door prizes, including an orchid. There is also a raffle (one for $3 or two for $5) for a gold necklace from Reed's Jewelers valued at over $500, an original piece of stained glass valued at $250, and more. Come one come all!
Meet at the Truckstop on the Brunswick county side of the Isabel Holmes Bridge. Be prepared to pick up trash along the roadside of our Adopted Hiway. This is hard work -- wear jeans, sturdy shoes. Bring a bottle of water. We will supply bags, safety vests and gloves. If you have a "grabber" tool, please bring it too, It will save your back! The more people we have, the less time this will take. The project should take between 1 and 2 hours, depending on how many people show up.

The January meeting will be a showing of more of the Penn and Teller episodes of their TV show "Bullshit", which debunk popular beliefs and urban legends. These are funny and enlightening shows of about 20 minutes each. Gary has graciously agreed to lead the discussion and supply the entertainment.
Thanks Gary!

Hi Everyone!
Please put December 22nd, Friday, down as the day we will meet for a Winter Solstice dinner.

We will be meeting at 7PM at SZECHUAN 130, a Chinese Restaurant located at 130 North Front Street in downtown Wilmington. Phone # there is (910) 762- 5782. This restaurant was chosen because it offers a wide variety of foods at reasonable prices, has a good selection of beer and wine, and has a private area where we will have a large table without a fee for a separate meeting room. It is located just one building south of the Post Office, between Princess and Chestnut Street. This is a one way street, and you can park on the street or in the parking deck on 2nd Street, and walk beside the post office parking lot to the side entrance of the restaurant.
The Meet Up website people are promoting the idea of making any holiday gathering into an effort to stock food banks for the hungry. I think this is a great idea, and would ask all who come to the dinner (or to the
Dec. 10th regular meeting if you can't make the dinner) to bring some canned food. We will make a donation in the name of the Freethinkers to a local food pantry.

The Cape Fear Freethinkers will have the regular meeting on the second Sunday of December, the 10th. We will talk about the holiday season and the ways in which to cope if you are not one of those who celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, etc.
Suggested reading:
"The Battle for Christmas" by Nissenbaum
"The Trouble with Christmas" by Tom Flynn

Both of these are available used from Amazon at very reasonable prices.

Also, Meetups across the country are promoting an effort to stock local food banks for the holidays. What a great idea -- anyone who cares too, please bring non perishable food to this meeting, or to the Solstice dinner on the 22nd, and we will donate in the name of the Cape Fear Freethinkers.

November 12th meeting:

Please read Sam Harris's new book, "Letter to a Christian Nation" in preparation for this meeting. You can get it for about $10 from Amazon or Barnes& Noble websites. We will discuss the book, and perhaps plan to purchases a bulk supply for distribution to the community.
We now have a private meeting space!! The OutWilmington Community Center is on the corner of Castle Street and 4th. This facility is a social and support center for the GLBT (gay) community, and welcomes and encourages all people working toward an enlightened and diverse community. They are delighted to host the Cape Fear Freethinkers on the second Sunday of each month at 11AM. This large airy room has sofas and chairs and can seat 40-50 people. It is ideal for group discussion or a speaker program. There is also a kitchenette and restroom. We do "pass the hat" at each meeting in order to make a donation to this facility, and for our other expenses. In general, we meet at 11 for coffee, hold the business portion of the meeting from 11:30-12, and reserve the last hour for a program or group discussion. or a speaker. Please think of program ideas, speakers, or discussion topics for future meetings.
