October's meeting will be centered around a video presentation, a humorous look at religious activities and also the world of paranormal beliefs. Gary has offered to bring in some of his recorded episodes of the cable TV show by the comedy team of Penn and Teller, which ridicules and reveals the truth behind some outlandish beliefs of the "faith based" world. The show is titled "Bullshit", and please be forewarned that profanity is liberally used throughout the videos. We will watch a least one episode (they run about 25 minutes each) and then have a discussion.
We now have a private meeting space!! The OutWilmington Community Center is on the corner of Castle Street and 4th. This facility is a social and support center for the GLBT (gay) community, and welcomes and encourages all people working toward an enlightened and diverse community. They are delighted to host the Cape Fear Freethinkers on the second Sunday of each month at 11AM. This large airy room has sofas and chairs and can seat 40-50 people. It is ideal for group discussion or a speaker program. There is also a kitchenette and restroom. We do "pass the hat" at each meeting in order to make a donation to this facility, and for our other expenses. In general, we meet at 11 for coffee, hold the business portion of the meeting from 11:30-12, and reserve the last hour for a program or group discussion. or a speaker. Please think of program ideas, speakers, or discussion topics for future meetings.

We will meet at 10:30 at the truck stop on the Brunswick county side of the Isabelle Holmes Bridge and Highway 421. (This is the bridge near the new PPD construction, not the bigger bridge south of town)

Be prepared to spend up to 90 minutes walking along the roadside, collecting trash on this 1 mile portion of the hi way, which we have "adopted". It is recommended that you wear long pants (jeans), and closed shoes, not sandals or flip flops. We will provide the trash bags, gloves and safety vests. If you have a "grabber" tool, please bring it. BTW, these are currenlty on sale at Walgreens, for $9.99.
Anyone who cares to can plan to eat lunch at the truck stop after we finish and celebrate our contribution to a cleaner community!

The Cape Fear Freethinkers will gather for a Pot Luck supper at Hugh McRae Park at 5PM Sunday, Sept 24th. We have reserved Picnic shelter # 4. This event will take place rain or shine, as the shelter is large. Please plan to attend with your families! This will be a great way for the kids to get to meet other freethinkers, and perhaps form the nucleus of a kids group for occasional activities.
Suggestions as to What To Bring:

We will provide soft drinks and ice, paper goods, music and games -- how about having a badminton tournament- we could have the Atheists against the Agnostics!

Everyone please bring your own eating utensils, and if you want "adult" beverages, please bring those as well.

Please make a dish to feed at least 6 people.

If your last name begins with A thru G, please bring a side dish or a salad, including potato salads, bean salads, etc.

For names which start with H thru N, please bring a main dish. This could be finger foods like chicken, pizza or sandwiches, or anything you like. We do not plan to fire up the grill, so please bring everything pre cooked.

For O thru T, please bring a dessert.

For T thru Z, please bring ice and soft drinks (diet and non diet)

The topic this month will be on becoming more comfortable in talking about your non theistic approach to life with people who do not agree with you. We have as a goal of this group to create more acceptance in the community at large of people who choose not to participate in religious institutions or beliefs. Several members have said that they are uncomfortable when asked to discuss this. We find that practicing a few "standard" comebacks when confronted helps tremendously with the comfort level and skill with which you present your belief. We will do some role playing (Pete has graciously agreed to be the militant Christian!) This should be fun as well as educational. We now have a private meeting space!! August 13 program: We will continue our discussion from last month, this time with an emphasis on the ceremonies of life- what do you do about weddings, funerals, major holidays, etc. Please bring in books, web addresses, etc., which may have helped you plan these events in a sectarian manner.

This event will be canceled in case of rain, so be aware!
We will have a picnic social at the flamenco guitar concert Paco Strickland is playing. The music is scheduled from 6 to 9PM. It is bring your own chairs or blanket, as well as food and drinks. The area where the concert is held is to the far right of the movie theater. There is not a lot of grass, so I'm bringing a beach chair to sit in. I will try to stake out an area to the left of the stage, fairly close to the front. I have been to these before, and this can be fun. I'll try to bring a balloon to mark our spot. Please RSVP so I know how big to make it! This is a good event for families/guests to enjoy.
See you there!

We will attend a showing of "The DaVinci Code" and walk over to the adjacent pub, The Fox and Hound, to have a libation or two and discuss the movie. We will attend the showing closest to 7PM - the times have not been published yet. Please plan to see the movie and attend the social at the Pub, even if you see the movie at an earlier time or different place. Or even if you haven't seen the film, we'd love to have you join for some fun and conversation. UPDATE: There is a show right at 7pm, so that's the one we will attend. The movie runs TWO and 1/2 hours (!) so that means we will go to The Fox and Hound at 9:30, if anyone wants to join us there without attending this movie showing.
