Winter Solstice Gathering

We would like to invite everyone to come and participate in a low key (but heartfelt !) early observance of the Winter Solstice, the real Reason for the Season. We will gather at our usual place at 5 pm. We do need to conduct some brief business in the election of the Board for the 2010 year. The slate of candidates is posted in a separate note on the calendar under this notice.
At the conclusion of the business portion of the meeting, we will open up the appetizer table and punch bowls for nibbles and refreshments. We will supply punch in both leaded and unleaded varieties, apple cider, and some appetizers and a dessert. Please feel free to contribute your own favorite finger food, or plan to make a contribution (minimum $5 per person please, excluding children). Yes, the little ones are welcome to attend. We will be providing a babysitter and the use of the classroom for the kids. This will be a Stand up --Move around---- mix it up opportunity to get to know your fellow members. We will be conducting some ice breaker type activities, breaking into groups at times, and there will be an opportunity to make your interests in forming special interest sub groups of our organization known. There might be some sitting on the floor or moving to different rooms in the building.
We will make this a festive occasion to celebrate the return of the Sun. Starting Dec 21, the days will begin lengthen again, so our crops will grow and provide food for our continued existence on planet Earth -- a great reason to light a Yule Log or have some victuals! Feel free to wear your snowflake sweaters or diamond tiaras -- we will be awarding a prize to the most festively dressed adult!!
One of the purposes of forming the Humanists and Freethinkers of Cape Fear is to create a community of like minded people and to make new friends! This Gathering will, we hope, be the platform from which new friendships are formed and new adventures launched. We hope you will join us!

Jan 10 10 2010 5:00 PM

Speaking on January 10, 2010 Humanist meeting will be Doug Pendergrass, a local Unitarian Universalist and Independent Theater Arts producer. He will talk about, and present clips from, his 2009 original stage production: "The Rights (and Wrongs) of Mary Wollstonecraft." The story, which focuses primarily upon Wollstonecraft's romantic affair and eventual marriage to William Godwin, touches upon the themes of equality, absolute honesty and truth, conformity, and the institution of marriage.

Join us for this meeting with a social hour and pot luck supper buffet afterwards. Please bring a dish to share, soft drinks provided, BYOB allowed.
