******* This is a monthly meeting where we discuss an article relating to some aspect of humanism, philosophy, current events, etc.. Articles will be posted for reading before the meeting. Due to the size of the meeting room, space is limited, so please RSVP before spaces fill up! Remember, this meeting is not in the same room as the normal group meeting. It's in Classroom 2 off the main hall. Enter at the door in the middle of the front of the building. (Note: meeting is at 7pm, not 6pm as was previously posted) ******* This month's discussion will be about three articles relating to the Death Penalty (links below). I hope this topic is something that will provoke different flavors of opinion, and I picked the articles because they address a variety of issues surrounding the debate. the articles http://www.slate.com /id/2141096/ http://www.nytimes.c om/2007/11/18/us/18d eter.html?_r=1 http://www.nytimes.c om/2009/09/28/opinio n/28mon3.html Hope to see you there!

Our monthly meeting this month will be "Growing Freethought in a Faith-Based Society". Religion in American is a sensitive topic. Some people demand that it be part of the public square and even preferred by the government over secular or rational views. In such a culture, practically any declaration by humanists and other freethinkers can be construed as offensive by someone. But if we believe our philosophy benefits humanity, isn't it important for others to hear our views? Roy Speckhardt, executive director of the American Humanist Association, will discuss how to unite and grow our movement in this faith-based society. Roy Speckhardt is executive director of the American Humanist Association where he actively promotes the humanist perspective on progressive political issues. He’s appeared on CNN Headline News, Fox News, numerous national radio shows, and has spoken to dozens of local humanist groups across the country. He also serves as a board member of the Humanist Institute and the United Coalition of Reason and as an advisory board member of the Secular Student Alliance. He holds an M.B.A. from George Mason University and a B.A. in sociology from Mary Washington College. He is one of the main reasons for why the AHA has more than doubled in the last few years. Join us for this important meeting with a social hour and pot luck supper buffet afterwards. Please bring a dish to share, soft drinks provided, BYOB allowed.

Our group will have a booth at Riverfest, as we did last year. It has been very successful in the past, and we hope to have a repeat of lots of good conversation, a small amount of bumper sticker sales, and lots of literature distributed. We will be in space # 203 which is on Water Street, near the corner of Grace and Water, in front of the parking lot which is behind the Cotton Exchange. Our tent is covered, and will have a few chairs, and tables for displaying literature. We are looking for our members to volunteer to be at the booth for a 2 hour time period on Saturday and Sunday, and for a couple of people to stay and break down the booth on Sunday evening by 5pm and help transfer the tent, etc to a car. We need help Sunday 10-12, 12-2, and 2-5 especially. And 1 or 2 more people for each slot on Saturday too. Please RSVP with a specific time you can work at the booth. We would like to have at least 3-4 people on hand at all times, but not so many as to prevent the casual visitor to approach - no more than 5 volunteers at once, I would think. If you volunteer, you will receive a Training memo about how to talk with people who are curious about what Humanism and "freethinking" is - as I said, it has been a fun time, with only a very rare antagonistic response. We need people who are welcoming and can walk up to a stranger with a big smile. Your initial statement is extremely important. Keep it short. Here are a few examples: “Hi there. Humanism is a positive, non theistic, very ethical way of living.” Can I show you some literature? “Hello, we’re with the Humanists and Freethinkers of Cape Fear, a new group providing a home for non theists to meet and build a community of likeminded people.” “Hello, our group provides a home and public voice for non theists interested in a positive, ethical, life stance. Here’s some information.” Then just let them talk . Thanks Everyone!!

Hi Everyone! We're finally starting up a secondary monthly Meetup for a small group discussion of interesting articles relating to different aspects of Humanism. We're meeting at the Unitarian Universailst Fellowship building, as usual, except we will be in Classroom 2, in the main hall of the building. Space will be a little limited, so please RSVP if you plan to make it. Humanism is an evolving tradition hopefully learning form the past and as such we'll be discussing two seminal documents in our nontheistic life stance to see how our movement and times have changed: Humanist Manifesto I (1933) and Humansit Manifesto III (2003) http://www.americanh umanist.org/Who_We_A re/About_Humanism/Hu manist_Manifesto_I http://www.americanh umanist.org/who_we_a re/about_humanism/Hu manist_Manifesto_III I hope to see you there, and if you have a suggestion for a future discussion article, bring it along, or post it on the message board. This meeting will be on the third Monday of every month.

"My Wake Up Call" In the aftermath of a serious traffic accident I began to re-examine my life’s priorities. In “My Wake Up Call” I share this exploration and identify resources available to humanists to recover from a life crisis. I conclude with two models for recovering from a life crisis. Randy Best, Ethical Culture Leader A life-long Humanist and member of Ethical Culture, Randy was born in St. Louis and grew up attending the St. Louis Ethical Society where his parents are still active members. Since 2008 he has served as the Leader (Humanist Minister) of the North Carolina Society for Ethical Culture. Randy received a B.A. from Grinnell College and a Master’s Degree from Harvard University. He is also a graduate of the Humanist Institute, certified Mediator, and Pastoral Counselor. Randy lives in Durham North Carolina with his wife Sarah Howe, a ceramic artist. They have four children whom they have home-schooled. In addition to his work in Ethical Culture, Randy works at Duke University as the Administrative Director of the Physics Department. Join us for this important kick off meeting for the fall meeting with a social hour and pot luck supper buffet afterwards. Please bring a dish to share, soft drinks provided, BYOB allowed.

A Pool Party! Sunday afternoon of Labor Day weekend (Sept. 6) so mark your calendars now! One of our members in Leland has graciously offered to host an afternoon Pool Party at their home. Let’s celebrate the beginning of autumn (well, almost) and the resumption of our meetings with this family get together featuring our usual yummy pot luck spread and swimming fun. The party will be from 2:30 to 6. Paper goods, ice, soft drinks and sub sandwiches will be provided. New info: We will be providing sub sandwiches, so we are looking for salads, deserts and other side dishes from the party goers!! But, do not feel that you have to bring food- we will be fine with just the sandwiches. We want to make this easy for people to attend! Just bring yourselves, towels if you are swimming, and food if you care to contribute something. . BYOB too please. We do ask that all children be supervised in the water at all times – there is no lifeguard on duty. This is a good chance for relaxed mingling and an opportunity to get to know other members of our group. We hope you can come!! RSVP early – we may have to cut off the number of guests should the response be more than our host can accommodate. Please RSVP with the number of people who will attend. You will receive directions to the house a few days before the party, and will be notified of a postponement in case of rain.

DON"T MISS THIS MEETING! I'll first we'll discuss some of the ways in which the arts have been traditionally valued (as morally enlightened, as a kind of calling, as justification for elitism, as spiritually and communally uplifting, etc.) and relate these to cinema, which as a relatively recent medium is still typically excluded from such conversations. Drawing examples from recent French, American, and other world cinemas, I'll then go on to talk about cases in which mainstream and arthouse tendencies, low and high art, have become blurred or combined, in peculiar but often very progressive ways. Case studies will range from politically engaged zombie films (France), abstract or unplaced war films (America, France) to SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. Some film clips will be shown. Many times Humanists think that humanism is only informed by Reason and Science. The arts and in this case cinema provides us with new windows to our world and provide transformative experiences to be more human.
