For those new to (or revisiting) Humanism, a great place to start is the Third Humanist Manifesto. It's only about a page long, and reading it is a great "sanity check" to see how much you personally resonate with the ideals of Secular Humanism. Another good resource is the list of affirmations on the web site for the Council for Secular Humanism. If you find yourself agreeing with much of what you read in those two places... you may very well already be a Humanist! 
Famous Humanists of the past might include Socrates, Voltaire, Thomas Paine, and Robert Ingersoll.
Famous contemporary Humanists include Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Christopher Hitchens.
