Altogether a fun evening with some rather nice people.

An interesting bunch of people turned up for a rather informal supper party and everybody engaged in a whole series of quite animated discussions. The fact that the supper party lasted 4 hours suggests the majority of us were enjoying ourselves. The most entertaining part of the evening was the finale when our organiser set about auctioning off the surplus food and drink. Only a group of humanists could treat such a serious subject as the valuation of a portion of Stilton as an opportunity for a lighthearted debate which led to a great deal of amusement, a certain amount of fundraising and a reasonable distribution of goodies to take home.

Nigel excelled himself in providing a tasty and well conceived birthday buffet, I was very tired and didn't know whether I would be able to keep my eyelids from drooping, but I got chatting with a relative newcomer, Anna, who dropped by to converse rather than eat and I found myself gradually awakened from my somnolence. I have said it before but there is something very special about eating in a public library - next time come along and see for yourselves. Nigel's bravura performace as an auctioneer at the end of the festivities is something wonderful to behold. Anna bid successfully for the components of a cheese sandwich!
